The Mediocre, The Worst, The Survived

The stars just did not want to line up for our backpacking trip to Mt. Timp (two weeks ago Seth got sick, one week later I got sick, and this week: Steph is sick... we went against better judgment).

In review:

  1. it was a good time practicing with our primes (16mm, 30mm),
  2. I really got a feel for our backpacking cookeries (will have to do a blog about that stuff),
  3. and, all-in-all, learned to be a little less urgent (probably didn't seem like it for anybody else).
I feel like this trip has laid down really good groundwork for our future adventures. To more adventures, my Hüf!

On Friday, we got off to a late start, made it to the parking lot by 4:30 PM and began the 6 mile hike into the wilderness (to our basecamp). We made mediocre time (it took four hours, one of our members had a bit of a bum leg -- felt like a crawl) and so, opted to camp in the meadows instead of our intended destination: the lake (Seth and I made an additional journey in half-light and darkness to filter and retrieve water).

It was a good thing we didn't camp at the lake (an additional 1.7 miles), because we decided to wake up before the butt-crack-of-dawn (4 AM), to hike to the top of Mt. Timp so that we could have a sunrise view.

... Steph was pretty sick (I'm pretty shocked and proud and a little ashamed that she made it to the Saddle whilst running a fever and on the verge of having an asthma attack) - so we decided to sit, wait, and watch the sunrise from the Saddle.

Steph decided to head down and rest; the rest of us continued on to the peak. Note to self: any time there's a summit, there will be a lot of wind, so BRING A WINDBREAKER. *sigh, I also lost my hat to the wind.

The rest of the day was just 'relaxation': hiking another mile (from basecamp) to the lake, setting up hammocks, playing some games, skipping some rocks. It was nice (a bit of a journey to 'relax', but nice).

The day ended early for us - as soon as the sun disappeared (note: not sunlight... as that lingers forever) and we were certain the fire was out -- we knocked out.

Sunday? Steph was done with her fever and headache -- we booked it down the mountain in just over two hours.

Goodnight Mt. Timpanogos.
